Blackbird Claims Ownership of Blackberries
About a blackbird with a blackberry addiction.

We have a lot of blackbirds in our garden, but there is one particular bird who has decided that any blackberries in our garden are his property.
We haven’t planted these blackberries, they just pop up in various places around the garden, and if they come up in a reasonable place, we leave them to grow.
We had a bumper harvest a few years ago, and there were lots of fat, juicy berries that I couldn’t reach, so I left them for the birds. They proved very popular with the blackbirds in particular, then one bird seemed to become obsessed with them. This has continued every year since. He ignores the things he would normally be wary of – cats and humans – in his fierce determination to get as many berries as he can!

This photo might look like the blackbird is preparing for take-off, but in fact he is jealously guarding a blackberry that he has just picked! Normally, I wouldn’t have been able to get this close, but the presence of his treasure, means he is willing to put himself at risk – he reminds me of Gollum!
I don’t mind, I’m happy to share, and he obviously enjoys them very much!

That is so lovely! very enjoyable read and wonderful photos!
Thank you Katien.
I don’t know who Gollum is or was but if Gollum was focused on getting what Gollum wanted more power to Gollum. I hope Gollum’s focus didn’t get Gollum killed.
Great pic to go with the article. I love to see the birds in the garden. We have a very brave and fairly tame Robin!

Nice article.
What a nice little story and lovely picture of the bird, I enjoyed reading this.
He is some brave bird. The birds here love the muskedines and blackberries.
I wonder if your blackbird is the one that’s on our ‘Most Wanted’ list here in Spixworth, Norfolk!! Each year we seem to get a blackbird (the neighbourhood have named him Barmy Blackbird) who gives the normal alarm call from the beginning of the nesting season (round about March) right through until mid summer. He does it practically non stop from dawn til dark and if anyone tries to frighten him off he dive bombs them. My poor cat was afraid to go out during daylight hours from the end of March until mid June and he even sits on the bonnet of our car and shouts at the image of himself in the windscreen.
We wondered where he’d disappeared to – obviously he flew south for the winter
