November 26, 2011: A blast from the past.

Have you ever had something enter your mind that won’t leave you alone until you do something about it? Enter “Basketball Jones”.

Though posted on YouTube February 28, 2007, as an animated video (of the 70’s era), the original “Basketball Jones” dates back to 1975. It was a comedy routine and creation of the duo Richard “Cheech” Marin and Tommy Chong, better known as Cheech and Chong. This outlandish and controversial comedy team held the imagination of the “in crowd” of the 1970s and 1980s with their films and stand-up routines. A lot of their routines were based on “left-over” hippies from the free love era, and especially drug culture movements, most notably their love for cannabis. One of the jokes (or mysteries) was: did they actually use drugs themselves.

When watching this video, one is struck by the stereotyping of the era. Pay close attention, though. The stereotypical imaging is inconsistent. Amid the laughs, shock and outrage, people are the same.

With that said, what new riddle will tie my mind up?
