High Speed vs. Dial Up
Are Webmasters missing the boat??

We all know high speed wins the battle hands down. I’ll never go back to dial up. Unfortunately many parts of the country don’t have access to high speed. I can’t get high speed on my phone line. Although I have cable I can’t get cable internet.
My boss has satellite internet and I consider it to be a waste of money. We started out with the basic package for $99.00 a month plus taxes. It cost $500.00 to have it put in. We were always going over our bandwidth so we upgraded. Now it costs $139.00 plus taxes.
My neighbor has dial up and I could cook dinner before the page even loads. This is not an option because I work online as well as full time and need to sleep sometime.
Another neighbor has one of those rocket sticks. She pays $60.00 a month for unlimited high speed. This is great for her because she travels a lot and the rocket stick works anywhere there is a cell phone signal.
I invested in a long range wifi antenna that I bought on ebay. I can now pick up a signal from the library across the lake. The antenna and USB extension cables cost less than having satellite installed and I don’t get a monthly bill. The antenna cost the same as buying a rocket stick, but with no monthly bill.
Dial up is getting worse. Pages are taking longer to load. It’s not that dial up is getting slower, it’s because webmasters are adding more bells and whistles to their websites. They have fancy, bandwidth sucking video intros that take forever to load on dial up. Even when the skip intro button finally loads it takes forever for the response to get to the server and stop it.
Are these webmasters missing the boat? Are they losing sales because they have effectively shut out the dial up world? I think they are. Make a basic webpage that those on dial up can access and buy your products. Add a link for those on high speed if they want to see all the bells and whistles. It’s one click and a second of their time. This will probably increase your sales and traffic.
To me it’s common sense not to shut out that many potential customers.
