My Top Five Laptop Pet Peeves

If you own a laptop, see if you agree with me. It might help with my sanity.

Laptops are great, but sometimes you just wish you didn’t have to deal with them. Not the actual computer itself, but the people who want to use your laptop.

Pet Peeve #5

People asking to use your laptop all the time.

Just because you have a laptop doesn’t mean it’s open season for anyone to use it. A laptop is a personal computer, I’m sure everyone lets others use it, but for God’s sake, if I’m using it, don’t butt in and ask to use it. I don’t just check e-mail, I also browse the internet, watch movies, play games…I’m not gonna stop everything just for you to check out that funny cat video and show it to your friend.

Pet Peeve #4

People using your laptop because it’s ‘faster’.

It is annoying beyond belief when people ask to use your laptop when there is a perfectly good PC nearby. A laptop doesn’t go faster than a PC, in fact if it’s a wireless connection it’s probably going to be slower. So why do you think it makes it okay to ‘check something really quickly’. If we have to shut down all our applications to ’speed up your session’, we don’t care if you take a minute or take an hour, you’re disrupting us. Use the PC and save everyone some time, especially if the laptop and PC are in the same room.

Pet Peeve #3

Clueless laptop users.

I love my parents. That said, if they are using my laptop, I will not go more than a foot away from them. Their solution to every warning, alert or popup? Press the big red X. Their browser of choice? Internet Explorer, not because they like it, but because it says ‘Internet’ on it and ‘Mozilla FireFox’ doesn’t. If a popup manages to get past my popup blocker, my parents will probably click it.

Yesterday I updated my OS (Vista, I know, I know) and this morning while I was still sleeping, everyone decided it would be great to get on my laptop and look something up!

So I’m in a half sleeping state, on the lookout for Pet Peeve #1 (you’ll see it soon), when it starts to update. First it shows a command-line sort of thing for about 10 seconds, then starts Vista. When that appeared and started copying files and whatnot, guess what they did?

Yep, turned off my laptop. Not the ‘click the button’ but the ‘hold the button down’ HARD shut-off. Concerned for my safety and not really trusting Vista with recovering from this, I decided to go help out before serious stuff went down.

Pet Peeve #2

Other users giving you advice or grief about your laptop.

Now if you’re using my laptop, stay quiet. Seriously. I don’t need advice about what antivirus I’m using, you don’t need to tell me you don’t like my FireFox addons, you don’t need to ask why I have so many desktop icons. You need to shut your mouth. It’s my laptop, not some sort of Geek Squad experiment. I haven’t gotten a virus yet, but you’re using my laptop because your PC is getting cleaned at the tech store. Why would I ever take advice from you?

Pet Peeve #1

Browser History and Icons – “What’s this?”

Now, to set the story, let me explain. I use StumbleUpon. This causes me to visit about 1000 sites a day, just from that. I usually clear my history, but sometimes I don’t, simply because history is useful for finding something you didn’t bookmark.

When you’re on my computer, on the internet, concentrate on the internet, please. If you wanna type in FaceBook and a whole bunch of sites starting with F come down, ignore it. Move on. Don’t ask me what they are, don’t click them. Chances are I don’t even know, 4AM stumbling isn’t really something you remember as important.

When you see a desktop icon called ‘lolwtf.png’, why click it? If you see Cheat Engine 5.4, do I need to explain hacking to you? Check your e-mail and gtfo.

That’s my little list/rant, I was wondering if other people had the same problems when using their laptop :)
