Feline Feces Coffee
Coffee made from Cat Poo on sale in London Department Store for £50 ($100) per cup.
On April 10 there was a story in the media about Peter Jones, the London Department Store, selling Cat Poo Coffee for £50 a cup. My first reaction was disgust, closely followed by incredulity. Why would anyone want to pay £50 ($100) for a cup of coffee made from cat poo? I thought that it was probably an April Fool joke that’s still doing the rounds, but I’m now convinced the story is real.
The Peter Jones website actually contains an announcement about the coffee, and how it came to be created. DeLonghi asked David Cooper, Managing Director of Coopers Coffee and World Barista Championship Judge, to make the world’s rarest blend of coffee so exclusive and expensive that it couldn’t be outdone. He came up with a blend of Indonesian Kopi Luwak and Jamaican Blue Mountain Coffee, and so Caffé Raro was born.
Kopi Luwak is the rarest with only about 300 kilos available in the world. The coffee cherry is eaten by the Indonesian Palm Civet Cat, the fruit is digested and the coffee bean is excreted in its feces a few days later. This is then collected, cleaned and dried.
Jamaican Blue Mountain is one of the most expensive and sought after coffees in the world, and is noted for its mild flavour.
According to the Daily Telegraph, proceeds from sales of Caffé Raro coffee, available till the end of the month, will go to Macmillan Cancer Research.
A barista is the coffee equivalent of a sommelier, and is someone who has acquired expertise in the preparation of espresso based coffee drinks.
If you’d like to try this coffee but can’t get to Peter Jones, or stretch to £50 per cup, you could buy a bag each of Kopi Luwak and Jamaican Blue Mountain Coffee on eBay, and have a go at blending your own.

I wouldn’t want to pay for (or drink) a cup of coffee made with coffee beans that came from the wrong end of an animal. I think I’ll pass and continue to donate to cancer research in the traditional way.

It’s really not a bad cup of coffee at all. Blue Mountain does not have to cost you that much, but the civet coffee, well, that’s not cheap anywhere.
Only cheap scum bags worry about the price of things.

Now that I’ve said that, it was a great article and beautifully done. I prefer to donate to charity in a traditional way also. I am not sure they should be feeding the cat like that either.

We eat animal feces all the time… shrimps and other bottom feeders. Who eats Chitterling? I don’t, but that is filled with feces. Why not some cat poo that can help with cancer?

Number 4, I take offence to your comment as I am one of those cheap scum bags who worry about the price of things. We work hard for our money and I would certainly not buy a cup of coffee for that price.

I just looked up chitterling. Gerlaine is right, apparently part of the chitterling is the last few inches of the intestine before the rectum of the pig, and so can contain some ‘fecal matter’, and should be washed and picked clean carefully and repeatedly! To the best of my knowledge this is something I’ve never eaten, but I’m certainly learning a lot of new things today.
The civet cat is not actually a member of the cat family. It is more related to the mongoose. The Asian Palm Civet feeds mainly on fruit. Not sure this makes the coffee any more palayable though.
wow.. it may be for a good cause…but that coffee is expensive and who would want to drink cat poo?
As much as I like cats, I wouldn’t drink that coffee.
Please people mind your manners. I myself have had a few people comment on my poetry..basically not really reading the poem…just looking for a fight. I echo Judy Sheldon…If you have nothing nice to say don’t say anything at all. Constructive critism is one thing…when used in the sandwhich approach..say something nice…let the writer know a away to improve…then say something nice again.
