Loathsome Foods

The following images may upset some readers. But what we find offensive and disgusting may actually appeal to others. Take a deep breath and get ready to see some of the most disgusting foods in the world.

Civet Coffee

Also known as Kopi Luwak (Indonesia) and Kape Alamid (Philippines), this world’s most expensive coffee is made from coffee beans that had traveled through the digestive tract of a civet, a small cat-liked mammal. The civets consumed only the finest of ripe berries, which would end up in a pile of poo only partially digested with the bean still intact. These beans/seeds are then collected, washed, roasted, and brewed into a coffee that tastes a bit like dark chocolate.

Testicles

In Western cuisines, testicles are often either discarded or further processed and sold as pet foods. However, they are normally eaten by humans in many oriental societies and are considered aphrodisiacs, particularly, the testicles of roosters, bulls, sheep and stallions. They are generally steamed; deep fried and can also be eaten raw. Serbian chef Ljubomir Erovic, the celebrated author of “The Testicle Cookbook: Cooking with Balls” has made it clear that all balls can be eaten, except humans, of course. The cookbook, which has somehow popularized such a delicacy around the world, included interesting recipes like testicle pizzas, battered testicles, calf testicles omelet and bull testicles with Béchamel sauce.

Maggot Cheese

Also called casu Farzigu or casu marzu, maggot cheese is what its name implies. This rare Italian delicacy, which is usually served during family gatherings and special occasions, is made from pecorino (sheep milk) cheese on which cheese flies (Piophila casei) had been deliberately placed to lay their eggs. When new born maggots are hatched, they would start the fermentation process by excreting digestive enzymes that break down the cheese fats, resulting in a delicately creamy quality but rather rotten and pungent taste. The cheese can only be eaten while the maggots are still alive, otherwise, it will become toxic. For this reason, its consumption was banned by the Italian government, although it can still be purchased on the black market.

Yuck! Interesting article but we all have taste that might not be acceptable to someone else. Somethings we like some others might find disgusting. I think a cucumber sandwich with peanut butter is just gross but my husband eats them all the time. Great article, Eddie.

Very disgusting indeed! But I llike balut, it’s good for a bottle of beer.

  12. Posted November 29, 2008 at 6:27 pm

Maggot Cheese…Oh! Thank you for the close up of the maggot. It made me want to rush right out and try some.

Fried what? Oh my! What a gross thought! Spiders are for stepping on…not eating.

Eating monkey brains…live or otherwise has to be the worst. We had a monkey who was a member of our family for many years and was smarter than a lot of humans I know. If they can outsmart a human…they deserve to keep their brains intact.

I agree with Karen Gross, leannehume, and R J Evans…Ewwwww, yuck!! LOL

All kidding aside, you have presented a very interesting article and thank you for sharing with us.

It’s so sad that so much food is so cruelly obtained.

    Regards,

How horrible, I know one mans trash is another mans treasure but this is so gross. I might be able to eat the fried spiders but that would be about it… Your article is interesting and we need to know how the rest of the world lives. Take care,Ruby

  15. Posted November 30, 2008 at 12:56 am

    spiders ewwww,no way

  16. Posted December 1, 2008 at 11:17 am

Interesting article but so sad. I wish our species could evolve a little higher to where we wouldn’t associate cruel acts as being a necessity for great dining!
I’d be willing to try the testicles but that’s it. No spiders, maggot cheese, etc!!!!!
I think that the next time my husband rolls his eyes at one of my ‘concoctions’, I’ll show him your article!! Haha.

  17. Posted December 3, 2008 at 12:31 pm

First may I say you have both written and used your pictures to produce and excellent article and it is what it is… Loathsome Foods. Your title says it all…. There are restaurants in some countries that you go in and pick out the puppy you want cooked. Here in the good ol’ US of A. there is much to do about some of the turkey farms and the way that their slaughtering is being carried out. You warned me but I had to look anyway… curiousity got the better of me. Your article certainly enlightened me on the art of fine dining and let me just say… EWWWWWW!!
    Great piece as usual… Karelee

  22. Posted December 7, 2008 at 3:41 pm

Very interesting article. I’ve heard of some of these like testicles and spiders, but most of them are new to me. I’d have to be pretty hungry to even consider eating monkey brains or maggot cheese. Great writing.

  24. Posted December 30, 2008 at 8:55 am
