Five Small Ironies of the Day

Current style and behavior contrasted with the way we were.

  1. People who lose their hearing are ashamed of wearing hearing aids, but people who listen to cell phones all the time are not embarrassed to be seen with a similar mechanism in their ear.
  2. People who take their teeth out at night try to keep it a secret, but women who take their fingernails off at night flaunt them all day long.
  3. Once, bald men covered their pates with toupees or hair combed over; now they shave their heads entirely.
  4. Once, teenagers who had braces on their teeth would suffer such nicknames as “metal mouth”; now teens voluntarily attach metal to their lips and tongues.
  5. Once, people were uncomfortable about watching too much TV; now they’re proud: it shows they’ve overcome the pull of the PC.
