It’s Not Always What It Seems
Think all medical discoveries are made from long periods of research at leading medical institutions. Well, think again. A tongue-in-cheek look at how one great one was discovered.
A local Tejano musician fights for his life this morning after being involved in a very bad vehicle accident over the weekend. His body temperature had been lowered to reduce swelling in his brain and give him a better chance to survive. Many people think this bit of medical acumen came from many years of research at leading medical institutions around the land. That is not really how it happened though. I have the real story about how doctors found out how to lower one’s body temperature to give one a better chance to survive!
Some poor guy was lying on the table in the emergency room about 90% dead. As the medical team was working on him they got a call saying more people were being brought to the emergency room. There were not going to be enough beds to do all that was needed. The team could really do no more for the guy they were attending, but they had no where to put him to make room for more patients.
Someone said, “Let’s just put him in the freezer!”
So that’s what was done. After several hours someone went to check up on the guy. The hollered for even to come and look, “Hey, he’s doing much better!”.
So a new medical procedure was discovered, quite by accident, that helps patients with severe head injuries. And you thought it took years of research to find this out.
