Tales of Katie: But God Spoke To Me Mummy…
Amusing tales from a three year old covering road safety, fish, childbirth and death.
Katie is the 3 year old granddaughter of a friend, not only does she make us laugh, she has so much wisdom and innocence I just have to share it.
1.
On a trip to the shops little Katie ran on ahead of her mum so she could be the one to press the button on the zebra crossing.
“Don’t you go across the road without me now madam,” her mum called to her.
When mum reached her, Katie had crossed to the other side of the road. Mum was duly mad and gave her a scolding.
“But Mummy, God spoke to me,” she insisted indignantly.
Puzzled, mum asked her exactly what had “God” said to her.
With a big sign Katie replied, “he said, the girl in the purple hat – it is safe to cross now.”
Stalling for time (like you do) mum looked around and spotted a police van parked at the side of the road – yes you guessed it – with a loudspeaker on the roof. It had been the policeman who had told the girl it was safe to cross.
2.
The same wee lass, when offered fish for tea politely refused.
“But you like fish,” her mum said.
Big sigh, (mummy is so dense at times) “well I did mummy, but now I know if we eat them all there will be no fish left in the sea so I don’t like to eat fish any more.”
3.
Katie’s other grandmother died a short time ago and no one knew quite how to tell her or if she would even understand.
Eventually her mum set her on her knee and tried to explain that she wouldn’t see her nana any more because she had died and gone to heaven. Mum asked her if she understood,
“Course Mummy,” big sigh, “it’s when you drop off the old shabby coat you wear so you can fly free like a butterfly.”
4.
Katie was born by Cesarean Section leaving her mum a horizontal scar which Katie had seen frequently. When told mum was carrying a new baby in her tummy Katie puzzled for a while on how it would get out. You could almost see her brain working at the problem until her face lit up, “I know,” she told her mum, “they’ll just unzip you like they did for me.”
