What’s An Eight Track?

I claim to be a technically challenged mom, but this is not the complete truth. I actually know a fair bit about technology, just not the advancements made since, let’s say, 1993. So I thought perhaps it would make me look a little more “with it” if I share my knowledge of the technologies that anyone under 16 has likely never heard of.

Billy Ray Cyrus recently released a song with the lyrics: “I want my mullet back, my Camaro, and my 8 track” Well, I’m not a huge fan of Billy Ray’s music, but I am old enough to understand the language he is singing. So, for the benefit of those of you who were not born before Billy Ray’s come back, here are a few translations:

Mullet

A hairstyle from the 80’s which required a team of engineers and architects to design and maintain. Products necessary to maintain the look at home could be purchased at any home building products outlet. My personal favorite was sculpting gel. This style, although somewhat expensive to obtain and maintain, is, in my opinion, the most aesthetically pleasing and practical of all hairstyles- you get height, you get length, and you never get hair in your face. For me, there was the added bonus of never getting my hair glued into my lipstick. I really don’t know (or care to know) if Billy Ray Cyrus or John Stamos (the guy in the picture to the left – if you watch cable reruns of Full House – you may know him as Uncle Jessie) ever have this problem.

I personally know nothing about cars, except that they provide transportation from point A to point B, and hopefully point B is a shopping mall. My hubby, on the other hand, knows a great deal about everything vehicular related. Back when we were dating, he drove a ‘72 Nova SuperSport. He tells everyone I only dated him because of his car. Not true. I dated him because he had a car, and I needed a ride to the shopping mall.

OK, even I am not old enough to have owned one of these. My dad had one. He listened to country music on 8 track. Hubby is slightly older than I am, and he also had one, but his collection of tapes included artists like Kiss and some group called BTO.
