LoLCats and Their Relevance
A website called I Can Has Cheezburger? speaks to anyone who has owned a cat.
Possibly the most hilarious website ever conceived, toe-to-toe with affiliate website Fail Blog (though, in my humble opinion, outdoing even that work of genius) is I Can Has Cheezburger? The idea, in case you didn’t know (if so, shame on you), is to write a caption on an image of cat that describes, in human-centric terms, what that cat is doing or thinking.
There is some terminology you’ll need to master. Cats are often referred to as “kittehs”, the Internet is called the “interwebs”, “my” is spelled as “mai” (as in, “O mai!”, inscribed on an image of a cat looking at its paw), and so forth. Cats are supposed to adore cheese burgers (”cheezburgers”). There is also a cat called “Basement Cat”, which is basically any black cat that someone deems to be sufficiently spooky or sinister to warrant a reputation of living in the basement. This stuff practically writes itself.
Why is any of this funny? Because a) it’s absurd, b) because it’s always funny to realise that other people “get it” (by that I mean cat owners who converge on the same character creations for their felines, complete with mannerisms and sayings), and c) because, in a way, it’s all true. We can imagine cats doing and saying these things if they could. We know that cats are selfish and arrogant (itself funny), and that, if they were large enough, they would kill us without a moment’s hesitation. This website is the sort of thing you giggle about on the bus.
