Washing dishes by hand, ok hands up all that do the dishes by hand these days we all have dishwashers don’t we.  We do not wash dishes anymore by hand; well that is what I told myself the other week then the dish washer broke down and I had to go out and buy a new one, good job I had my helium payment on hand We are in a recession don’t you know.  Moreover, it is a good job I can wash the dishes by hand or to be more precise she that must be obeyed bless her could do them.

Yes yes I know I am being a bit sexist but I have to have a bit of fun sometimes you know, anyway getting back to washing the dishes by hand. We did not have dishwashers way back in the middle ages when I got married we had to wash them by hand, after every meal we stacked the dishes in the sink in a bowl of warm water and left them to soak for a few minuets, that’s to let all the food that has gone a little bit hard on the plates go soft, it helps to get it of in a few minuets.

Now that we have let the dishes soak for a few minuets, let the water out of the sink, and refill with fresh hot water, squeeze a little washing up liquid into the hot water, and now begin to wash the dishes with a plastic dishwashing brush, this is a brush that is about 9 inches long. Now I like to rinse the dishes as I wash them, I take a plate or a cup wash and then with the hot water tap running I hold the plate under the stream of water. What this does is get rid of all the soapsuds and it makes it easy to dry.

As you wash and rinse put the dishes onto the draining board, goodness I haven’t used that word for a long time, God I feel old using that word, ok I hear you say that’s because you are old. Well yes I am old that’s because I can remember how to wash the dishes by hand, we did not have dishwashers in 0 dot. Any way getting back to washing, the dishes remember to pay particular attention to any glasses that you washing, rinse all the washing up suds out of the glass, that’s because if you don’t you will taste the soap in any drink you have when fill with what ever you are drinking. Moreover, believe me when you drink from a glass that has not been rinsed properly you will go Yuk and make a funny face. You will notice that a glass has not been rinsed properly if you fill with a carbonated drink, you will notice that the froth comes half way up the glass and takes a long time to disperse. If this happens, tip the drink away and rinse properly.

Now you think that you have finished don’t you, silly you, you have forgotten to dry the dam things. Take a tea towel and dry each item and put away in your cupboard. Some people like to wear rubber gloves to wash the dishes, I myself have never washed the dishes wearing gloves, and I like to get my hand wet so to speak.

You know it is much easier to get a dishwasher I will be glad when my new one comes, it is not fair on she that must be obeyed bless her while I sit down and watch the television while she does the dishes. Mind you come to think of it, she that must be obeyed is a lot cheaper than a dishwasher is. That’s it my mind is made up I am canceling the dishwasher.
