At the Call Center
1-4-3-44…
We all sat down waiting for our turns to be tested at a call centre. Hours passed and we were done with the preliminaries, my seatmate was telling us that she was asked for a reference number to her audio exam and that she said it was 14344.
“Are you sure?” I asked unable to help myself burst into laughter. It was exactly the same question as the person who asked her for that reference number.
“Yes, I’m sure na mao na” she replied in broken English.
”Sit down and do it again!” she was ordered.
The same H.R. personnel approached her when she stood up to say she was done but she merely put scratch marks on that piece of paper where she was supposed to write down the reference number.
“Sit down and continue.”
On the third time, she was told “You should listen.”
As I have taken the audio exam too, there was supposed to be a prompt that would say be ready with your pen and paper to write down the reference number to your test and if at anytime you do not hear, please press the pound sign to replay.
As she still had to train her ears to the English language, 1-4-3-4-4 seemed a consolation. What made it funny is that, for people in my country, it stands for either ”I hate you very much” or “I love you very much.” Alas, what made it an unbelievable combination was that she was expected to hand over a 6-digit combination.
