If ever you would have the chance to change your ethnicity, would you do it? I, myself, am guilty of committing such thought of traitor. There are so many things those other countries posses that we cannot have. There are so many progresses that seem to be an unachievable horizon for our dear old country. Don’t you want to get those?
Sometimes, it is quite shameful when I go about my usual online activities and someone goes asking “Where are you from?” Hesitatingly, I answer – Philippines. Why? Most would tend to act nice and just say: Aaah, but for those who has zero cultural sensitivity would reply with “That’s a third-world country right?” or “So you’re one of them maid-importers?” – The times I really wanted to lie and blame typo. Before the Spaniards came to our Mother Land, we had our own products, culture and traditions. Then some tweaks were added both implied and by force. Either way it’s still ours. Then why does Filipinos still lack contentment on what is already in our possession?
Nowadays the standard for a good quality product is when it is labeled “imported”. Why do you think Beyonce Knowles sells more album than our national artists? We tend to call locals as corny and instead go out buying stuffs overseas.
The sweetest thing is what we can’t have- maybe this is true. But does it mean that you’ll start to ignore the blessing in from of you? Same thing goes for nationalism. The Philippines is a beautiful land, filled with rich cultures and traditions. We all need to appreciate jewels found right here. The Pearl of the Orient Seas is worthy to be given the homage it deserves from the people it shelters. Remember, standing and lip-synching to our national anthem is not enough unless you know the song by heart.

I have never thought of the Philippines as a third world country. I had never heard it mentioned before. The pictures I see from there are beautiful.I hope I respect all countries. I would never say anything to offend anyone. Of course if you live there you know better than I how people behave toward you. I hope things will be better for you and your people.
