A.B.A.T.E.

I’ve always like motorcycles. Always wanted one. I’ve ridden a few that weren’t mine, but never owned one until about six years ago. Sadly that one got totaled by my son within two months. This was an accident that could have been prevented with just a little education and respect of property.

I did not learn until recently that there is a nation wide organization working to keep roads safe for motorcyclist. A.B.A.T.E., which stands for American Bikers Aiming Toward Education, not only is an organization that helps educate people into being safe motorcyclist, but also lobbies for the legal rights of motorcyclist. My girlfriend is a member of the Arkansas A.B.A.T.E.

In each state there is a state wide organization of local districts formed by cyclist to promote a positive image. This is done through local civic, charitable and benevolent causes. While at the same time monitoring legislation and testifying in motorcyclist behalf during Senate and House hearings.

A.B.A.T.E. collects, processes and exchanges information that concerns members by publishing a monthly newsletter.

Who Is A.B.A.T.E.? They are motorcyclist and persons interested in cycle legislation and education. These are people who own all different brands, makes and sizes of motorcycles. This also includes those who do not have a motorcycle, but either plan to have one or just love bikes.

Why do we need such an organization? Bikers, more than any other group, have become increasingly aware of the affect government regulations have on our daily lives. Recent actions of State and local Governments that interfere with biker rights include:

1.Banning ALL motorcycles completely.
2.Outlawing certain types of motorcycles completely.
3.Attempts to create a “Global” standard of motorcycle manufacturers. (this would outlaw any attempts to customize your bike)

Individually, bikers may have a small affect on the legislative actions described here, but collectively, bikers who take part in an organized Motorcyclist Rights Organization have greater power.

Though A.B.A.T.E. you can receive a certified rider eduction course for beginners and experienced riders at various locations throughout each state. Many districts offer a tuition discount to their members. In 1994, A.B.A.T.E. received the AMA’s MVP Award for their efforts in advancing Rider Education.

Whether you have and ride a motorcycle, plan to get one, have a child getting one or feel you want to help other riders then you should be a part of A.B.A.T.E. There is an A.B.A.T.E. in every state. Please take the time to contact them.
