World Gurning Championship

World Gurning Championships have been going on since 1266. These championships are the climax of the Egremont Crab Fair and take place in Cumbria, United Kingdom in every September.

Gordon Mattinson won the World Gurning Championship highest number of times (10) and holds the Guinness World Record.

The whole idea of this championship is to make as hideous a face as possible. Many people of all ages participate in this championship and pull ugly faces, framed by a horse collar. The winner is the person who gets the most audience applause for his or her ugliest face.

World Mobile Phone Throwing Championship

World Mobile Phone Throwing Championships started at Finland in 2000. Since then they have been held annually in several other European countries and United States. The UK has been conducting these championships every August. This year the championship will be held in Hampton Hill, UK on 31st August. The contestants must throw a mobile phone as far as they can.

World Toe-Wrestling Championship

The World Toe-Wrestling Championships are held in every July in Bentley Brook Inn, Fenny Bentley in UK. The toe-wrestling contest is conducted for charity. Each match is played either by two men or by two women. Mixed gender matches are not allowed. The contestant must raise one foot off the ground, while the toes of the other foot engage the opponent’s and tries to push the other’s foot over toward the dreaded line, which consists of a wooden board. The person who has the strongest toe is the winner.

World Stone Skimming Championship

World Stone Skimming Championships started in 1983. They were held in New Zealand, England, Scotland and Australia till now. Last year these championships took place in the month of September on Easdale Island, Argyll, Scotland. There are six categories including men, women, junior boys, and junior girls, under 10 boys and under 10 girls. Every participant is allowed three skims using Easdale slate skimming stones. For qualifying, the stone must bounce at least three times. The winner is selected based on the distance achieved before the stone sinks.

World Bog Snorkelling Championship

The World Bog Snorkelling Championships were first held in 1985. This championship has taken place on the August Bank Holiday every year since then, near Llanwrtyd Wells in Mid-Wales. In this competition, the participants must complete two consecutive lengths of a 60-yard water filled trench cut through a peat bog. The person who crosses it in the shortest time is the winner. While participating in this championship, competitors must wear snorkels and flippers.

World Worm Charming Championship

The World Worm Charming Championships started in 1980. In this championship, 3×3 meter plots are allotted to each participant and within 30 minutes one has to collect as many worms as possible. Certain rules are in place for charming worms. Participants should neither dig their plots nor use any drugs or water. They have to use only vibrations for charming the worms out of earth. They are allowed use any kind of music they desire. Garden forks may be stuck into the ground, and vibrations by manual means are encouraged.

Tom Shufflebotham is the present Guinness World Record holder, having collected 511 worms in 30 minutes.

Swamp Soccer World Championships have been conducted since 2000 in Hyrynsalmi in Finland. The players have to play soccer in a swamp. General soccer rules and regulations apply, but there is no offside in swamp soccer.

World Marble Championship

World Marble Championships are held in April on Good Friday every year. Many people from all over the world participate in this contest. There are many varieties of the game, but the rules are same for all. Each player is given a set of marbles and is asked to throw it in a hole. The player who gets the most number of marbles in the hole or the most number nearest to the hole is declared the winner.

    I have tried stone skimming many times, but didn’t know there was a Championship. The others are new to me. Thanks for this interesting article.
