Extremely Weird and Ridiculous Phobias

Published by Verniel Cutar in Offbeat

Long ago, a great man once said that the only thing to fear is fear itself. But as time went by, it seemed as if new fears or phobias were invented. It’s time to check your updatedness on the world of fear. Here are some of the strangest and most absurd phobias that ever entered the mind of humanity.

The Fear Of Long Words, Or ‘Hippopotomonstrosesquippedaliophobia’

fear of long words

I’m afraid I might catch this kind of phobia if I try to spell the word mentioned above! Next time you see someone with this kind of fear, don’t ever tell them the name of their phobia because it will surely freak them out. People with Hippopotomonstrosesquippedaliophobia (whew) can’t sleep with a dictionary or thesaurus present in their room. They believe that long words are diabolic creatures with two horns, a tail, and a pitchfork.

The Fear Of Laughter, Or ‘Geliphobia’

laughter

Does Popeye make you laugh? If it does, then don’t watch it when you’re with a Geliphobic person. I’ve never seen a Gelophobic person in my entire life, but I suspect my former biology professor had this fear. Whenever an innocent member of the class laughed at an illustrated diagram of the reproductive system, or a swelling mouth of a poisonous frog, the professor felt something was wrong and started to become defensive. He seemed to think, “The laughter must be stopped at all costs!”

The Fear Of Swallowing Air, or ‘Aerophobia’.

Find The Laughter

Yes, people with aerophobia are afraid that air might get into their stomach, become ill digested, and eventually poison the body. Perhaps their dream is to finally live on the moon, where there’s no air present. For the meantime, while they’re still on earth, they carefully watch every breath that they take, making sure that the lips are tightly closed during inhalation. It’s safer, you know.

The Fear Of Looking At Oneself In The Mirror, or ‘Eisoptrophobia’

There's a monkey in my mirror

The old saying is correct: “You can’t face the problem if the problem is your face”. That’s the reason why Eisoptrophobic people can’t look themselves on the mirror. We may never know why they have this fear, but I’ll make a wild guess. Perhaps they see the Bride of Chuckie or Bigfoot himself each time they look at the mirror. Or I could be wrong.

The Fear Of Thinking, Or ‘Phronemophobia’

Genius in Bottle

The ideal hobby for Phronemophobics is blinking, or any other involuntary movement. They are afraid to do anything beyond that. Think about it! If you make a Phronemophobic person think, he won’t think twice about throwing you out the window. He’ll do it instantly.

Reminder: This article is only for entertainment purposes and does not attempt in any way to make fun of those who are suffering with phobias. It is advisable for sufferers of real life phobia to seek medical help as soon as possible.

I also have a phobia of rubber bands. I cant stand them. I cant stand the smell. I wouldnt dare remove a rubber band that is wrapped around something like an envelope for example, even if my life depended on it. I hate the thought of holding one in my hand and stretching it. Gives me the chills.

My phobia started way back when i was still a toddler. I remember sitting on the potty one day and glancing down and seeing the white rubber bands peaking through my stockings. i started screaming blue murder. When I was around 7 years old, my brother cornered me in the backyard, and with his HUGE red rubber band, started putting it around my head, and i can feel the band all around my head, and the smell as the band brushed past my nose, over my mouth just about made me die of shock. I screamed and screamed for my mother. She came out and whacked my bro one. I was in shock for the rest of the day. He continued to torment me with it over the years. I dont think i will ever get over this phobie. I dont know where it came from or why it is there. I think its just something you are born with. A long time ago i attempted to touch one, and i did. I even gave it a little stretch. But something inside me freaked and i threw it away. I think this is with me for life. *sigh*

Finally! Everyone thinks I’m nuts because I hate rubber bands. They smell terrible, and when I touch them, the smell never seems to come off my hands. The plain colored brownish ones are the worst for me, because they always appear to be dirty. I hate the snapping sound they make when you stretch them and then let go. It really grosses me out when people wear them around their wrists and play with them constantly.

One of the first dates we went on she came and picked me up from work and i had a rubber band in my pocket (i didn’t know she had the phobia at the time) when i pulled my wallet out of my pocket the rubber band fell out. she then couldn’t touch me or anything i had touched for the rest of the nite untill i had a shower!!! and scrubbed my hand clean!!!

I didn’t realize there were so many others with a rubber band phobia! I cannot stand them and seeing people with them around their wrists or in there hair creeps me out. I can touch them if I have to but I hate it and do it as quickly as I can. I have no idea why they bother me so much and I hate that they do, but can’t get past it. It’s esp difficult having kids because they seem to love them and they sneak into my home far too often.

Wow! Finally some other people who share my phobia! The fear of rubber bands! I’ve never met anyone else who had this problem and it’s so embarassing that nobody understands it. Some of my friends do the stupid slingshot thing with them and fling them cause they think it’s hilarious, when really it isn’t. It scares the hell out of me and makes me want to vomit when they touch me. It’s especially nasty when people chew on them like gum, or when people take them out of their hair and leave tangled nasty hairs all over it. The tan ones especially freak me out, the thicker the scarier. Even Lomein at the chinese restaurants freaks me out if it resembles rubber bands. I can’t even eat if there is a rubber band in the room, especially if it’s within eyesight. I once had a job where I had to rubber band stacks of paper and I would ask the girl sitting next to me to do it. Sometimes I even ask the mailman to take it off of my mail. Some people think they’re convenient. I just think they’re disgusting and I never want to see another one again.
