I Found a Way to Work Less, and Make More Money
A way of thinking about your future. What would you do if you had a million dollars?
I know a lot of you are thinking, “What would I do if I had a Million dollars?”
- What would you spend it on?
- Where would you go?
- What bills would you pay?
- What family members would you help?
- Where would the kids go to college?
- Are you going to buy a house?
- How much time would you have to spend with your family?
- Would you invest it?
- and so on
Honestly, when someone asked me those questions, my only thought at the time was my sons.
I’m going to tell you a story starting from January of 2005.
I’m an Ultrasound Technologist by trade for 14 years. I came to live in a little town in Northern Arizona in 2005. Being a single mom with 2 boys. I wanted to be as close to them as possible in case something happened. I have no relatives in Arizona, so a small town seemed to be the best answer for us. During the last 4 years the three of us began to grow and makes friends. I bought a house, new car, some outdoor toys. I even went on a few dates! I worked like crazy at the hospital, taking call at night and on weekends. My goal at the time was to make over $100,000 in a year and save as much money as I possibly could. My sons and I love to travel, and I wanted to make sure the would have money for college when it came time. Two years in a row I was able to save almost $40,000. In the mean time, my sons were growing up right before my eyes. We were having so much fun together.
Then January 2008, I had an accident at work. My co-worker and I were in the ICU preparing to do an Echocardiogram on a patient. We had to roll him over to his left side, she took the right side of the bed and I took the left. We were able to roll him partially over when I heard the POP! My left shoulder dislocated. Needless to say, I was put on medical leave, went to physical therapy. My Doctor at the time wrote me a note saying I could return to work with minimal use of my left arm. This was so frightening! I don’t know any Ultrasound techs who scan with just one arm. I spent so much time and money going to school and building my career for it to be over in an instant.
Guess what? There went my savings, the 401k, my families house threatened by foreclosure, our new car threatened to be repossessed, I must have had 10 creditors knocking on my door, no medical insurance, medical bills piling up, and pretty much everything else of value was sold in a yard sale.
But…………..Those were just things. Right?
So much has happened in the past year and a half both good and bad. I’ve had to push myself everyday to try and find a solution. I wanted my own business and the chance to do whatever I want, when I want to do it. My own Ultrasound Business. I figured it might solve all my problems. I set off into the wild blue, I spoke with as many Doctors as I could to promote myself. I found a few good paying prospects here and there who were willing to use my services. For the most part, it’s kept me afloat.
Personally, I’m a true believer in the term “Things happen for a reason”. After the dust has settled, and I put my thoughts back together. I realized maybe, I was working too hard. I missed my sons growing up due to my own personal goals and insecurities of not being good enough.
Right in front of my eyes my oldest son’s voice changed, he grew 5-6″ over night to be almost 6′ tall. At 15 years old, he’s a brilliant scientist and does wonders on the computer. He works out everyday and even started shaving that one chin hair. I think he even has a girlfriend because he always smells good.
I never made it to any of my youngest sons football games or skate championships because of my work schedule. My little one is now 13 and boy is he a character, he reminds me of Will Smith in the “parents just don’t understand” video. He’s not that great in school but he’s very articulate. (He never shuts up) The girls just adore him………..this makes me sick to my stomach they call at all hours of the night. So annoying!
P.S: I hid his phone shhhhhh!
Not too long ago I was online trying to figure out how to build a website for my 3D/4D Ultrasound Biz. I rarely go online unless it’s to order goods, or look up general information. This place is a whole other world, total endless possibilities. In my search for answers on how to build a website. I came across ads for marketing online and making money by placing ads on your website. Sweet! sounds good. Now how do you do that?
I asked my wiz of a son…………and bought an e-book on Google profits. Once I implemented Google and clickbank into my life and website. I became consumed with it. I began to make money here and there from the ads. My first month I cleared approximately $600. During the first week, I thought I was going to pull my hair out. Every resource online tells you to do something their way. Pointing you in directions you have no clue what they are talking about. I’m an illiterate Webber. The interesting part to all this is that it is possible.
Over the past year and a half, I have really had to put my thinking cap on. I need to do something to bring in money when I’m not working. I need to get insurance but, with previous medical issues I can’t.
I bought coach purses on ebay and sold them at a hair salon here in town. I had a business in my early 20’s making beaded jewelry so I started it back up and sold jewelry at the local doctor’s offices. My friend, an OBGYN told me I could make lots of money selling Arbonne (womens health products) which she owns the market here in town. I took my old cannon EOS out and started taking outdoor family photos, and I’ve done 2 weddings so far. So with all that I’ve made less than $500 and I keep plugging away at it. Some of these little off the wall jobs are very therapeutic even the internet thing.
How much do most people spend on their education? A Doctor spends approximately $80-200,000 and 6-10 years of schooling. Nurses $20,000 with 2-6 years. Ultrasound Techs $35-50,000 and anywhere from 2-5 yrs of school. Medical Assistant 1-2 years $15,000, X-Ray tech 2yrs $25,000. 4 years of college for whatever! will cost $5-20,000 a year! My boyfriends Air Duct cleaning service “certification training” $2,000 for a 2 day course, equipment ($10,000) airfare, and hotel room not included!
In essence, for my education, I spent $20,000 (1995) for school. My annual cost for continuing education (CME’s) is approximately $200-400. My yearly registry renew fees are $600. Not to mention, the registries I have were $200 EACH. I’ve been blessed to be able to work for the past 14 years in this field and spent nearly $34,000 on my education during that time. I love what I do but it takes me away from my family. This is the price you pay for education.
My most immportant commodity are my sons.
My point, just like the question I asked at the beginning. What would you do if you had 1 Million dollars? How hard would you work for it? What would it mean to you and your family?
September 2009 marked a turning point in my life. My little football star broke his leg in practice. The weekend prior while tooling around on google. I found another online marketing website. I had been researching this site for a few days, something about it made sense to me, not the Million dollars part. Financially Free, Freedom makes sense to me. Translated to “More time”=my sons. You do the math.
I decided that night my son broke his leg to invest in this Business in a Box (another school) it was $350.
I have to tell you that I am not rich, I am definately on a budget. This is not something I invested in “just to see” how it goes. What do you do when an opportunity comes along to start your own turn-key business with initial training for $350? There’s a monthly consultant fee, but they build the ads, they do all the call backs and the seminars, the websites are built for you. You just have to learn the computer language, follow the steps, listen to your mentors, and place the ads where they tell you to. I will make it work and move up to the next level of education with in 90 days. I understand what it takes to work hard for what you want.
So, the Business in a Box. What is it?
It’s another school that will instruct you on how to be your own boss to get you to that 1 Million dollars. Most people only work to the extent of what they think they are worth.
As long as you can follow directions, be dedicated to yourbusiness. Focus on what you want, and change the way you think. Basically, you have to shock your system!
