One Way Both Ways: French Road Madness

A french road is one way both ways. Confused? Read on….

France is an odd place.  At the top level there is a lack of democracy.  The Politian’s all go to the same schools, and they tend to be officious technocrats at heart.  But, at a local level France has a lot of relatively powerful majors that put local democracy most of the world to shame.

The result of this localisation can, however, be a little comical.  So when two Parisian Mayors decided that their end of a street should be one way, then the result was a one way two way street.  So the street ended up being one way going in one direction, and also one way going in the other.  This added a great deal of understandable confusion to motorists.  The intervention of a local prefect eventually resolved the issue.  But its another example of the quirky French and why we love/hate them.
