Find a feather pick it up and…

1 : Make a feather duster. This item has been used around the home for many years, in films the traditional black dressed, high society maid is often seen with a feather duster, flicking her way around the bric a brac. The popular feather for this is the Ostritch feather. It is soft and hard wearing.

2: Decorate a hat. Feather have been used for generations for decorating hats or for head wear. Modern wedding fascinators (head decorations) are often made with feathers

Pheasant and peacock were always favourite feathers of the Victorian ladies.

The longer and brighter the peacock feather the better!

3: Sensual Feathers. The feather boa is often portrayed as a sensual item, it is used to tease and tantalise the flesh during sexual activities. Fun in the bedroom can be enhanced with a soft, colourful bird feather, a brush against a thigh or breast can lead to a night of passion.

Madams of brothels were often portrayed as dark, mysterious types and inevitably had a feather boa draped across her shoulders, often the only item of clothing worn! Valentines night is probably awash with feathers in the bedroom, champagne, roses and a sexual tease (usually the feather) is the fantasy of many.

Native American Indians used feathers for clothing and decoration. Head dress and dream catchers are items that spring to mind. A good old fashioned game of Cowboys and Indians was often sparked off by finding a feather.

6: Fly a Plane. Men strapped feathers to their arms and jumped from great heights in order to fly.

Abbas ibn-Firmas, a physician covered himself with feathers, he attached wings, he was successful for a short distance. Unfortunately he crashed to the ground and injured his back. He blamed the failure on not having a tail.

7: Make your bed.  Grandma’s feather mattress was a serviceable item in the home. Duvets, quilts, eiderdowns and pillows are stuffed with feathers of a variety of bird feathers. The favourite is duckdown, it is soft and lightweight.

There you have it, the seven uses of many feathers.

I don’t think I’ll try flying… but I use feathers for all sorts of crafts, and kids are forever bringing me their pretty finds.

There we are Glynis, many of us have a broad mind. Yes Number 3 has my vote as well. Now I will have to go to the garden and find some feathers and have some fun with my wife later on!

    I liked that one.

Thanks for that. Although we do have a feather duvet (it’s not just Grandmothers…), I haven’t used a quill in ages. Seeing one made me smile.
