This is the Tamil month of Aadi. It is considered as the most inauspicious among the Tamil months. Hence, the textile stores are offering rebates on various items of cloth varying between 10 % and 50 % to augment their sales.

The Chennai Silks at T.Nagar was very busy and overcrowded. At the entrance, there were a number of dolls, wearing costly sarees and remained imprisoned within the glass panel.

At a portion of the glass panel very nearby the entrance, there were two such dolls posing so magnificently. One doll was wearing a new designer cotton Saree and another doll was wearing a very costly handwoven silk Saree.

But those two dolls did not look at each other and looking at the opposite direction as if they were a daughter in law and a mother in law.

‘Are you not ashamed to wear a costly silk Saree that too at the cost of our boss?’

‘You cannot even speak with me.Don’t you know the value of my Saree? It is Rs one lakh. You see how beautiful it is! It has been handwoven and how costly its border is; it has been woven with golden threads. You see how my Saree is shining in a golden color. Do you know your Saree has been made or woven out of only cheap cotton threads?’

‘I know ,my Saree may be cheap. But it is not causing any harm to anybody. But your Saree is made of silken threads. But they are sinful; made out of the larva of hundreds of silk worms. Your Saree is tainted with their blood; just for the sake of the majestic look of your silk Saree, do you know how many thousands of larva of silken worms have been killed that too in a boiling water.Your Saree is thoroughly born out of sins.

‘Can’t you see how people are looking at me with awe and wonder?Your Saree is so cheap and practically have no value at all. And you have no takers too.’

“But my cotton Saree has got a tradition to cherish; born out of pure white cotton fibre. People mostly prefer only cotton sarees, especially the house wives, college going girls, office goers and people from all walks of life. Moreover, cotton Saree can be worn for all occasions and for all seasons; but what about your silk Saree ?I can even challenge you that only during auspicious occasions like any function and marriages , the silk Saree can be worn. Can you say how long people can wear a silk Saree? Don’t you know how uncomfortable the people who wear a silk Saree ? Besides, your silk Saree befriends only rich people and a poor man cannot even think about it.Whereas, the cotton Saree is within the reach of a common man and he or she can easily afford to buy it  ‘

Without knowing the tug of war going between the two dolls, a customer purchased the cotton Saree clad by the doll. The doll wearing the silk Saree looked at it rather zealously.

Lovely fabric and I learned something I didn’t know. I did not know that silk worms are killed to get the silk. I thought they spun cocoons that silk was spun from. Good story.
