Time: The Great Reaper

We are slaves to time. When we can rid ourselves of wanting time and only time, we can see our lives for what it really is: A wonderful adventure to do with as we please.

Time is a subject that all the people that are, were, or ever will be can relate to.  This is the deciding factor in all things.  For examples, if you want to go see a movie, but also want to see a T.V. program; you schedule the movie after or before the T.V. program.  Here’s another example, you have to be somewhere at 8:00 am;  a friend of yours asks you to go out.  You set a specific time you have to be home in order to get to bed at the right “time.”  Our whole life, whether you know it or not, revolves around this one subject.  What’s one of the first questions people are asked?  How old are you?  How long have you lived here?  When are you guys getting married?  What time should I be there?  All of these questions are asked by billions of people every day.  Even you have probably asked many, if not all, of these questions.  This is just an example of how much “time”  rules our lives.

Let us really figure out the idea of time.  What is time?  Well, let’s go back to our old reliable source that tells us about everything:  the dictionary.  According to that, time is “A non spatial continuum in which events occur in apparently irreversible succession from past through present to the future.”  What this says is that time runs in a straight line and everything happens in that line.  Pretty much a given idea, right?  Now that we know exactly what time is, we can look at how time involves us in our daily lives.  Let’s make a list of things we have to do and how much time it takes for each:

Sleep…..7 hours (average)
work…….8 hours (average)
Eating…..3 hours (hour/meal)
Shower…..15 minutes (average)
Total….. 18.25  hours (average)

This list is just one of averages and basic activities we must do every day.  We have to sleep:  there’s no way of getting around it.  It’s horrible, because sleep is one of the biggest robbers of time.  Think about it; if you sleep, on an average, of 8 hours a day, you’ll sleep 56 hours in a week, 224 hours in a month, 2688 hours in a year, it just adds up pretty fast!  Every day, on average, we spend 18.5 hours doing things we have to do.  This isn’t taking into consideration everyday actions such as going to the toilet, getting dressed, school, etc.  Each day lasts 24 hours:  24 – 18.5 = 5.5.  That means you have 5.5 hours to do anything you want.  Imagine how much of your life is wasted in this little bit.  This is a scary thought.

When you look at these numbers, you know why fast food places are so popular.  Now we have to look at what things we can change.  For one, we could decrease our sleep, but that takes a lot of work.  First, you have to train yourself to get less sleep, and you have to use a lot of mind techniques.  A couple techniques are: For two weeks you set your alarm for one hour earlier.  The next two weeks you set your alarm another hour earlier.  You continue to do this until you get to an amount of sleep that is considerably less than the amount you started; yet you still can function correctly. If two weeks is not enough time for your body to get used to the lack of the hour; allow a longer period.  Another technique is to set an amount of sleep that you want to sleep.  Then use your alarm clock to make sure you only sleep that amount of time.  At first this is very hard, but as your body gets used to it, it becomes natural for you.  Then on a predetermined day sleep for eight hours.  But sleep this eight hours in the middle of the day, around 3:00 pm.  Why at 3:00?  Because at 3 in the afternoon your natural body rhythms are at a low and are ready for sleep.  In these ways you will reduce your wasteful sleeping hours considerably.  Unfortunately you can only lower that number a certain amount.  On record, there was a person who was able to drop his sleep to 4 hours a night. That seems that that’s as far as we’ll ever get the amount of sleep down to.  Just for the fact that our bodies need sleep.  When we sleep our body restores depleted reserves of energy, eliminates waste products from muscles, repairs cells, strengthens the immune system, and recovers physical abilities lost during the day.

Now work.  We can’t change the amount of time we work very much unless we have been given the money.  This is the reason lotteries are so popular.  The lottery, in an essence, gives you 8 hours a day.  The average Joe needs money in order to pay bills and such.  Eating seems to be the only place we can change the numbers without a lot of work.  We could drop this as low a 1 hour.  If we don’t drop it correctly, we will become fat and out of shape, or thin and dying.  Thus, one has to be careful about that.  The last one is the shower.  You could easily change this, but it’s only 15 minutes.  Now that we see how much time you’re actually playing with, it makes us understand exactly why everyone is so wrapped up and worried about time.  They want to make the most of their 5.5 hours.

With this time that we are allotted, we need to use it productively.  Remember, we will die one day and this will all come to an end.  We have to jump and do things now.  We have to enjoy life; we don’t have enough time to not like it.  Life should be enjoyed because its neat, and living is the best thing you can do.  Right now your living and shouldn’t think about dying. Why think about something that will eventually happen?  Just look at the time we’re allotted, it’s not that long.  It’s just like if someone told you that you can run through a store and take as much as you want for 30 minutes.  Would you walk around making sure you got just the right things and keep looking at your watch to make sure you have enough time? Or, would you run as fast as you could and grab every single bit of stuff you could lay your hands on up to the last minute?  This is like life.  Do you want to walk around slowly and spend time looking at just the right things, acting jurst the right way?  Or would you run and see everything and grab onto everything that your hands could touch.  This is how you should go through life.  Experiencing all, and stopping never.

What are you going to do with your precious time?  Are you going to sit around and do nothing, just taking each day as it comes, and still doing nothing with each day?  will you only know what you read or watch on T.V. from your chair?  As your body comes to the conclusion that you’re not going to use is, it decides to plant itself in and become sedentary.  You just sit and think about when you’re going to die.  Will it be a good death?  Will the funeral be payed for?  Or, are you going to jump out of the mouth of the lion, and grab the proverbial bull by its horns and go for broke.  Don’t worry about the problems of life that don’t mean anything, worry about what actually matters.  Think to yourself for a moment on what actually matter in the life that you lead.  Why worry about the small superfluous things that too many people worry about.  Why spend the time worrying about anger or some conflict that has happened, when you could spend the time enjoying the life you have.  There are people who see all the bad things in life, these people we call pessimists or realists.  These people are the people who can’t see that life has more to offer than just a depressing existence with too many problems.  To these people I say, lighten up and relax.  What have you got to lose?  Just sit back and deal with one day at a time.  Don’t let the problems of life bother you.  Remember, life is all just one big joke, smile, laugh, and get on with it.

There isn’t enough time to hurt your life.  Throw away emotions such as jealousy, hatred, or sadness. All these emotions are useless; they just drop you to a low that isn’t wanted.  Jealousy can be discarded by trust, sadness by happiness, hatred by acceptance.  Life is good; take it at that.  There’s no time for grudges or worrying. We will have none of that.  If you hold grudges, it’s a form of hatred.  We want to strive on totally getting away from hatred.  When something pisses you off, fine deal with it then.  Don’t deep worrying and delving into the problems.  Worrying like that is not needed.  Worrying will just cause more of the emotions that we are striving to get rid of.  This doesn’t mean totally cut them off, just don’t use them.  If youdwell on somethng too long, it will hurt your body: ulsur, heart-attack, stroke, depression…

Do not think, though this will be easy.  Denying the instinct to let out feelings and ideas you’ve had all your life is difficult.  Try to unlearn to walk or talk, for example.  Fortunately, it was said that it was difficult, not impossible.  YOu will see other things and realize just how cool life can be.  When all the distortion is gone and you can think clearly, it’s truly a mind-opening experience.  This is, if you will, another form of evolution.  We are evolving into a more life fulfilling people.

By throwing unwanted and unneeded actions out of your life, you creat time.  By creating time, you give yourself more time to enjoy, see the beauty of the world, love, and be happy.  When you are happy and have very few worries, you see all things more clearly.  When things look clear and undisturbed, all is at peace.  This is where you want to strive to be.

With time continually moving forward, one side effect occurs: you age.  Remember this though:  YOuth is not a time of life, for it is a state of mind.  Nobody grows old by merely living a number of years; people grow old by destroying their ideals.  Years wrindle the skin, but to give up enthusiasm wrinkles the soul; the soul is where life is.  That is the most important part of this whole thing: LIFE.  Let it help you develop and grow to the heights that you wish to achieve, and keep yourself just like you want to be.
