In our calender why does February has 28 days and July and August has 31 days?
We follow the Roman calendar. All the days and months have been fixed by the Romans.
It is said that at King Romulus’s time, harvesting and planting got the main importance to prepare the structure of calendar. So, March to December was the months of importance. It is still not known officially, whether there existed any months between December and March. It is believed that at that time, there were 10 months. And so, December was very apt name as Dec means 10. There was lot of leap days which were added frequently to line up with the seasons.
Later two more months, January and February were added to complete 355 days in a calendar year. February was at that time the last month of the year.
King Numa Pompilius divided the 355 days which is equal to 12 lunar cycles into 7 months of 20 days and 4 months of 31 days. The only month left out was February with 28 days. It was considered the unlucky month.
According to others, July month was named on Julius Caesar who took over Rome. July was earlier known as Quintilis. At his time February used to had 29 days and 30 days in a leap year. August had 30 days. July has 31 days to honor Caesar.
Later Augustus came and August which was earlier known as Sextilis was named on him. He borrowed 1 day from February to increase the number of days in August to 31.
