Yes, There is a Real Farmville
It’s situated in the geographical center of the state of Virginia.
Farmville,Virginia is the seat of Prince Edward County, Virginia and at last check had a population of 6,845 residents and still counting. It’s located at the confluence of U.S. 15, SR 45 and U.S. 460 and is the home of Longwood University.
I first learned of Farmville while living in Norfolk. Virginians love to talk about the civil war days even though it did not end favorably for them. “The south will rise again” is a catch phrase that continues to show up on tees and bumper stickers from time to time but Farmville played a major roll toward the end of the Confederacy.
The rebel army was perilously short of supplies and rations in the spring of 1865 and Farmville was targeted by the Confederate Army to replenish its needs. The supply train was supposed to have gone to Danville but was diverted to Farmville instead. An advance by the Confederate calvary under the command of Fitzhugh Lee was halted when the Union calvary and two divisions of infantrymen arrived, commanded by General Philip Sheridan. The rebel forces attempted to flee across the Farmville High Bridge but the entire Army of Northern Virginia under the command of General Robert E. Lee was quickly surrounded and the surrender took place at Appomattox on April 9, 1865.

Today, Farmville is a growing bedroom community due to its proximity to Lynchburg and Richmond. Many Longwood alumni choose to remain to take advantage of the low cost of living. Longwood is generally considered a teachers school and was previously called State Female Normal School. It is known as the mother of sororities as four major ones were founded there: Sigma Sigma Sigma, Alpha Sigma Alpha, Zeta Tau Alpha and Kappa Delta.
Those of you who grow crops, raise animals, fertilize your neighbor’s fields and do everything necessary to build and maintain a farm in cyberspace, remember–long before there was a Facebook there was already a Farmville…in Virginia.
