Jean Bastiste Point du Sable an African American from Santo Domingo was the first to establish a permanent settlement in the Chicago area in 1781.

In 1870, the Great Chicago Fire destroyed 17450 buildings, which virtually turned Chicago into a city of ruins of ashes.

The most infamous crime boss was Al Capone. In the roaring twenties, Al Capone controlled the sale of Alcohol during the years of Prohibition in the City of Chicago. Eliot Ness and the Untouchables busted up his crime ring and Al Capone was convicted of tax evasion and later died in Alcatraz prison.

Chicago is the home of the Sears Tower, which was built in 1973 and soars 1,451 feet high.

Another fun fact! The river is the only in the world to run backwards (away from the water source). They changed it when they were dumping too much in the water and had to keep changing the intake levels. Another one that we all know- the wind is wild in that city!
