Facts and Photos of a Very Cute Animal: The Hamster
Hamsters are popular pets these days but they have only been domesticated for less than 100 years.

Hamsters are stocky rodents with a relatively short tail and fur that can be of different colours. They are originally crepuscular animals which means they sleep during the day and come out of their burrows after sunset. This means their eyesight is rather not well developed but they have very sharp hearing and an acute sense of smell. They are also colour blind so it doesn’t matter to them which colours their toys are.

There are several different species of hamsters in the wild, most domestic hamsters are Golden Hamsters or Dwarf Hamsters. Hamsters only live 2-3 years in captivity. In the wild they would search for food at night carry it in their cheek pouches and return to their burrows. Their cheek pouches can carry nearly half of their body weight. Hmaster’s two front teeth never stop growing throughout all its life.

Hamsters can breed a lot in their lifetime, in order to avoid pregnancy you must separate the male from the female, there are no other forms of contraceptions. Hamsters are well known for eating their babies at times. Apparently they can recognise their family members even if they had been separated.
