The Eagle and Child

Unusual Plaque.

The photograph above is of a house which is found between Allgreave and Gradbach in the Staffordshire Moorlands U.K. At one time the house had been used as a tea room, however these days it is a private house with the occassional nosey passerby with a camera like myself who stop and take a few shots! The house is called the Eagle and Child as legend has it that many years ago an eagle abducted a small child or baby, whether or not it took place at this house I am not sure, it may have just taken place in this area, however the event has been duly recorded in the plaque above the door of the house.

Another possible explanation is that this plaque represents a family coat of arms, I am not sure which is the true explanation, however it does add to the uniqueness of this strange area.

St Edwards church tower in Leek. Photo by Gary Tacagni.

The photograph above shows the clock which is situated in the tower of St Edwards church in the town of Leek located in the Staffordshire Moorlands U.K. According to legend Oliver Cromwell fired a cannon from Gun Hill which is fairly close to Leek, and according to the story the cannonball struck the tower creating a large hole in it, to camoflage the hole a clock was added, and that is said to be the reason why the clock is slightly offset where it is situated.

I do know that Oliver Cromwell was in the area at one time because Biddulph Old Hall came under bombardment by a large cannon in his possession which was named “Roaring Meg”, so perhaps there is an element of truth to this tale after all!
