Where Do Yo-Yo’s Come From?

This article gives details on the history of the yo-yo.

Can  you  believe  that  the  yo-yo  is  the  second  oldest  toy  in  the  world?  It  is  believed  to  have  been  invented  in  China.  Although,  the  first  mention  of  it  historically  was  from  Greece  in  about  500B.C.  The  yo-yo’s  were  usually  made  of  wood,  metal,  or  painted  terra  cotta  discs.             The  yo-yo’s  that  were  usually  made  of  terra  cotta  {clay}  were  used  in  a  custom  offering  to  Greek  gods.  When  a  child  turned  of  age,  he  or  she  was  to  offer  toys  of  their  youth.

Another  historical  record  of  the  yo-yo  is  in  the  16th  century.  It  was  rumored  that  hunters  in  the  Philippines  hid  in  trees  and  used  a  rock  tied  to  a  rope  about  twenty  feet  in  length,  to  throw  at  wild  animals  beneath  them.  Their  version  was  large  with  sharp  edges  and  studs.  It  was  also  used  to  fight  off  enemies  for  about  four  hundred  years.  Some  studies  suggest  that  it  is  a  made  up  story,  but  others  insist  that  these  are  facts.             In  the  1920’s  a  Philippine  immigrant  named  Pedro  Flores  began  making  and  selling  a  toy  labeled  yo-yo.  He  became  the  first  person  to  mass-produce  yo-yos  at  his  toy  factory  in  California.

In  the  year  1929,  Duncan  saw  the  yo-yo  and  bought  the  rights  from  Pedro  Flores  and  then  trademarked  the  name  Yo-yo.  Duncan  changed  a  few  things  on  the  toy  so  that  tricks  can  be  done.  He  also  made  a  factory  in  Wisconsin,  which  became  known  as  the  yo-yo  capital.  The  Duncan  company  sold  a  record  of  45  million  yo-yos  in  a  country  of  only  40  million  children.

There  are  many  yo-yo  brands  now.  The  best  is  still  produced  by  the  Duncan  Company.  There  are  many  styles  and  colors,  and  some  glow  in  the  dark.              The  yo-yo  is  very  famous  in  paintings  and  portraits  of  history.  The  yo-yo  was  in  the  portrait  with  Napoleon,  and  was  known  to  be  his  favorite  toy.              The  yo-yo  has  been  all  over  the  world.  It  has  been  in  space.  NASA  took  the  yo- yo  aboard  Space  Shuttle  Discovery  in  1985.  Later  it  found  it’s  way  back  in  space  on  Space  Shuttle  Atlantis  in  1992.

Even  to  this  day  the  simplicity  of  putting  your  finger  through  a  loop  made  at  the  end  of  a  string  while  holding  the  yo-yo  in  your  hand,  and  throwing  it  downward  to  make  it  “sleep”  can  be  fun.  The  best  part  is  when  you  flick  your  wrist,  and  it  comes  back  up  the  string  to  your  hand.

One  of  the  famous  people  of  all  time  with  a  yo-yo  was  Linda  Lorenz  Sengpiel  A.K.A.  “First  Lady  of  Yo.”   She  was  born  April  29,  1943.  She  loved  the  yo-yo.  By  the  time  she  reached  eight  years  of  age,  she  had  won  many  tournaments.  When  she  turned  thirteen  she  took  home  the  gold  in  regional  competition.  She  was  against  five  hundred  other  contestants.  Mr.  Duncan  wanted  her  to  become  a  spokesperson  for  his  company.

Later  she  developed  her  own  company.  Her  accomplishments  with  the  yo-yo  were  countless.  She  inspired  many  with  her  talents.  She  was  the  first  woman  and  one  of  the  greatest  yo-yo  artists  in  history.  She  died  at  the  age  57  on  April  13,  2001.             Many  people  still  participate   in  annual  tournaments.  Tournaments  are  based  on  skills  consisting  of  tricks.  Walk-the-dog,  shoot-the-moon,  and  rock-the-cradle  are  the  names  of  some  tricks.  The  judges  even  time  how  long  the  yo-yo  “sleeps.”  Which  means  the  time  the  yo-yo  can  spin  at  the  end  of  the  string  without  coming  back  up.             The  tournaments  are  still  held  annually.  If  you  want,  you  can  become  a  great  yo- yo  artist.  All  it  takes  is  to  get  yourself  a  yo-yo  and  practice.  It  is  a  good  toy  and  sport.  The  yo-yo  may  be  old,  but  it  will  be  used  for  centuries  to  come.

Oh yea- the days of being a kid, most of us enjoyed a duncan yoyo we would practice for hours just to impress our family and friends. The information I found in this article had many facts that I had not heard of before “very interesting indeed” I never knew this was the oldest toy in the whole world, wow. I imagine more people has played with a duncan yoyo then any other toy. I know we have had several different ones in our family, this toy has been passed down from one family member to another, for years. Just think about it, one of our all time favorite toys actually going up into space, thats pretty cool. Thanks Alisha for reminding every one of the smiles a yoyo has brought to so many of us.
