How High Does an American Hold Their Head?
Do this short exercise to see how high you, as an American, should hold your head.
First, I will give some simple instructions to follow. Start with your head in a neutral forward position. For every question that you can answer, “yes,” put your head up about ¼ of an inch. For every question that you answer, “no,” put your head down ¼ of an inch. (If you have head or neck injuries, please consult your physician before participating in this program.)
- Have you ever read the Constitution of the United States in its original form? (Don’t be shy, move your head a little one way or the other.)
- Have you heard the terms, “Federalist,” or “Anti-federalist?”
- Is the Unites States of America supposed to be a, “Republic?”
- Do you know the difference between a Republic and a Democracy?
(How is your head doing? Don’t worry about your co-workers peeping over their cubicles at you – you probably don’t look that weird yet.)
- Can you name one way that our current Constitution differs from that of its
original form?
- Do you know when the Republican and Democratic Parties started?
- Can you name one foundational principle that most of the Founding Fathers actually agreed on?
- (If you answered, “yes,” to the above question go on to question #9. If you answered, “no,” skip to question 10.)
- Does our current society in America still uphold that foundational principle?
- Do you think that in the Founding of America, the Founders were thinking of us in this generation?
Great Job! You can return your head into a neutral position again. Roll it around a little if you need to. Now for your self-evaluation and some simple recommendations. If your head was:
a. Down so low, that you couldn’t finish the test – that is okay. My recommendation is to google some answers, or better yet, read some real historical books. (Then, send this quiz to those who are harassing you as you study.)
b. Down a little low – still doing okay. My recommendation is to sip a cup of nice hot chocolate, snuggle in a dark corner and find the answers that you didn’t know. (Then find somebody who knows more than you do about this, talk to them, and evaluate if they are telling you correct things.)
c. Neutral – you are in a comfortable position. My recommendation is to make yourself a little uncomfortable by challenging a friend to a U.S. history knowledge competition. (Keep a good reference by your side to uphold your answers.)
d. Your nose is a little high – silver star for you. My recommendation is to find out why it matters that you know a little. (Then ask yourself why you do not know a lot.)
e. Your nose is in orbit – gold star for you! My recommendation is to let two people know what you know, and back it up with a reference. (Then, make a test like this with different questions and send it to your local newspaper.)
