The World’s Longest Fingernails
Imagine what it must be like to perform everyday tasks with fingernails this long. These people manage!
Sixty four year old Lee Redmond of Utah, USA holds the record for the longest fingernails. The total length of her talons in 24 feet and 7 inches. She keeps them supple by rubbing in olive oil. Since the record was set in September this lady has decided to cut her nails as she needs to take care of her husband who suffers from Alzheimer’s.
She hasn’t cut her nails since 1979.
A retired Indian photographer from Poona near Mumbai has been growing his fingernails for almost 50 years. He has put them up for auction. His thumbnail alone measures 4.8 feet and resembles a twisted, thin, antler like protrusion. It is tortoiseshell in colour and coiled up in spirals.
Shridar Chillal has held this record for 20 years. His hands are permanently disfigured because of the weight of these nails. You can see the coil formed by his thumbnail in this picture.
Li Jian Ping of Shishi, Fujian Province, China is a close contender for this record.
Li Jian Ping heard about the Indian photographer and was determined to beat him. He has not cut his fingernails for fifteen years and the combined length of the nails on his left hand is over one metre.
Barbara Wing of Salt Lake City, Utah didn’t reach the record books but her nails are strangely beautiful.
She had been growing her fingernails for over fifteen years when she had this nail art applied. She proudly displays 10 Jazzmen on her 7 inch long nails.
Lauretta Adams from Dallas, Texas tried for 25 years to grown her nails to record breaking lengths.
They reached 150 inches when she decided to give up and cut them in October 1997, as they were causing her pain.

Gosh, you can’t do anything with such long nails. Imagine typing on a keyboard with those?
I agree with #1. You would think having your nails so long would keep you from being able to do a lot of things. (It’s a good way to get out of doing the dishes though)

Lizzie, this beats all. I prefer trimming mine when they get a little long. How can you stop them from getting caught on things, and my pets would revolt if I couldn’t pet them. lol

wow that is kinda cool but how do you pick up the phone,close your shirt,hold a spoon/fork/knife, and but the great part about having long nails is that you have a great back scratcher were ever you go.

Yeah, that is only for people who are desperate for attention, because… seriously, no one thinks that that is attractive.
* You can’t follow every day things such as:
– Go to the bathroom.
– Open doors.
– Drive
– And much… much more.
* People everywhere are probably repuled because you can’t possibly keep them clean all of the time.
* And… you always have to have someone with you because you can’t do things for yourself.
So… if you have any pride, or dignity, please keep your nails short and clean. Nails are not meant to grow to extremes like that, because if you have to soak them in olive oil, you know it’s not natural.

If someone wants super long fingernails that’s their choice. If they are clean why should someone else judge? I read that she was going to have them cut last November so she could take care of her ill husband but there’s been no follow up story on that. If she did I’m wondering whether she has any regrets and how she feels about the much more freedom she must have after having them cut. Did you notice the dynamite figure she has for a woman her age?

Wow, I’m completely obssessed with stuff like this! I just looked up to world’s youngest mother who was 5, then I came here. This is soo cool! But how could you have sex? I mean, my God… That would be my only problem. ;D

There is a news article in the deseret news today that Lee Redmond got in a car accident and her fingernails (which were still long) were broken off. So I guess she didn’t trim them to care for her ailing husband afterall. But now, they are gone. It’s interesting that she didn’t break bones or suffer any injuries that were reported, just that she broke off her fingernails. usually that would not make it into the story. “A 3 car collision on I-15, Several Broken Fingernails Reported”
I know! just read it about her breaking her nails in car accident – so did a search and found this! My thoughts exactly on the whole ‘having them cut to take care of her husband’ imagine what the past 30 years must’ve been like. Maybe she got her husband to do all the chores etc, now he can’t do them and she has to! As well as having to look after him now, of course. I’m lucky if i can grow my nails more than 5mm before they break off! Maybe I should try olive oil?! Anyone fancy setting a new Guinness world record?….. it’s there for the taking now!
