What one name can connect all of the following:
1. An African lake also known as Nalubaale & Ukerewe
2. A provincial capital on an island overlooking the Pacific’s Juan de Fuca Strait
3. The Roman version of the Greek goddess Nike
4. A spectacular water feature which is known locally as Mosi-oa-Tunya.

The connection between the four items above is the name Victoria.

1. Lake Victoria is also known as Nalubaale & Ukerewe.  The largest lake in Africa and chief reservoir of the Nile, lying predominantly in Uganda and Tanzania while also bordering Kenya. It is the second largest freshwater lake in the world with only North America’s Lake Superior being greater. Whilst searching for the source of the Nile British explorer John Hanning Speke discovered the lake in 1858, being the first European to do so, and named it for Queen Victoria.

2. Victoria, capital of British Columbia, Canada. It is located on the southeastern tip of Vancouver Island, overlooking Juan de Fuca Strait. One of the province’s oldest communities, it was founded as a Hudson’s Bay Company fur-trading post known as Fort Camosun in 1843 and was later renamed Fort Victoria to honour the British monarch Queen Victoria.

3. Victoria, in Roman myrhology, the personification of Victory and the Roman equivalent of of the Greek Nike.  Especially worshipped by victorious generals and the army there was a temple in her honour on Rome’s Palatine Hill.

4. Victoria Falls, on the Zambezi River between Zambia and Zimbabwe.  The British explorer David Livingstone was the first European to see the falls on 16th November, 1855. He named them for Queen Victoria of the United Kingdom, they were known locally as Mosi-oa-Tunya (the Smoke that Thunders); today Zambia uses the traditional name while Zimbabwe they are known as Victoria Falls

The falls themselves attract tourists from all parts of the world and the surrounding Victoria Falls National Park, Zimbabwe and Mosi-oa-Tunya National Park, Zambia abound with game and offer other recreational facilities. The entire area of the falls and surrounding parkland was designated a World Heritage Site in 1989.
