Common Signs of Bad Luck in Western Culture
These are just a few of the many signs of things considered to be bad luck throughout the west.
First a little bit about luck. Luck is really a superstition, I don’t believe in luck but its fun to play along. The reason people will tell you its bad luck to do something is because they’ve had bad luck with it in the past. For example, if you walk under a ladder and it breaks and you get crushed you would most likely warn your friends not to do that because you don’t want them to get crushed like you did. Parents tell you things are bad luck so you don’t do them, not so a chain of bad things will happen to you. Nevertheless here’s a list of all my favorite superstitions!
1. Walking under a ladder. This is a very old one I’ve been hearing about for as long as I can remember. Although no ones really gotten bad luck for walking under a ladder there have been multiple times that something (like wet paint) fell of the ladder and landed on whoever walked under it. People have also walked under the ones with only one side that you have to prop up against whatever your climbing up and bumped it resulting in the ladder falling with the person, and whatever was on it.
2. Spilling salt. Spilling salt is another one of those signs of bad luck you here every now and then. This one is a popular one and is depicted in many thing such as the movie dumb and dumber. In the movie someone spills over the salt, as rumored, the only way to get rid of this bad luck by salt is to sprinkle the salt that spilled out over you right shoulder. The guy throws the whole salt shaker over his shoulder and kits some big guy, which is why he is probably called dumber.
3. Black cats. I’m guessing, the reason for this superstition is because some genius, walked past a black cat and of course was attacked by the cat. This superstition is another oldie. But come on, obviously if you pop out and grab a black cat its going to scratch you, this isn’t one I would particularly worry about, but a little word of advice, if at all possible, steer clear of stray cats. (and dogs for that matter)
4. Friday the thirteenth. Although there’s nothing you can do to avoid it Friday the thirteenth is one major “Holliday”? That isn’t very fun. Like the salt spilling over it is in a less funny movie…. Appropriately called Friday the thirteenth. In it some invincible, psycho, goes around killing people. Someone must have a had a very bad Friday the thirteenth in the past!
