The personal stereo or walkman was invented by a Japanese electrical company called Sony in 1979.

Percy Spencer invented the microwave oven just after the Second World War. He invented it when he had been working on ways of using invisible waves to detect enemy planes. When the waves melted the chocolate bar in his pocket, he realized they could be useful for cooking too!    

Two brothers- will and john Kellogg, invented cornflakes by accident, when they were trying to make a new type of bread.

Coca-coal was not a fizzy drink in the beginning. An American chemist called John Pemberton invented it as sweet syrup in 1885. Soda water was added to it later to make it Fizzy.

The first paper straw was made by Marvin Stone in 1880.

The first waterproof raincoats were making in 1823 by Charles Macintosh that is why they are often called Macs.

The first jeans were made by Levi Strauss for gold miners in the USA. He made them in a hard-wearing blue cloth that was used to make tents. These days it is better known as denim.

Elastic was invented by Thomas Hancock in 1820. When he invented elastic, he thought that it would be useful along the top of the pockets to stop thieves. It was someone else who realized it would be just right for holding up people’s underwear.
