Matches

The safety match was invented in Sweden in 1844. At first matches were sold in tins, but later they were packaged in a matchbox with a special striking panel on the side. The Swedish Match company Bryant & May and Swan Vestas were all famous brands. Some matchboxes were produced as promotional gimmicks by other manufacturers.

Matchboxes were made all over the world, and many of them bore pictures of life in their home country – Belgium, Holland, France, Norway, Sweden, Finland, Estonia, Austria, Switzerland, Czechoslovakia, Italy, Russia, South Africa, even India, Thailand and China. But almost all were labelled in England.

Hair Gel

Brylcreem was a greasy hair cream that could be run through the hair with the fingers, slicking each hair into place. Developed in the late 1920s by a Belgian scientist, it was sold in tubes or little glass jars. Its success indicated that men could be every bit as appearance-conscious as women.

By the 1940s Brylcreem was an essential style accessory for any man wanting to impress, whether in the office, dancing to the swinging sounds of the Glenn Miller orchestra, or flying a fighter plane in World War II. In fact the RAF “boys in blue” were dubbed the “Brylcreem boys” because of their sleeked-down hair and ruler-straight parting. New hairstyles also came with this essential object for men these are, the pompadour, bepop, back sweep, panama, beechy head, dupe and crest all kept in place by the wonderful Brylcreem.
