Animal World: Facts and Peculiar Things
Fantastic animals.
Here are some facts about animals and their unusual traits.
- Male koalas feed during the day. Females sleep all day and feed at night. Nice shifting!
- Basenji, an African wild, dog is the only dog that can’t bark. Weird!
- Hagfish has teeth on its tongue. That’s unusual!
- The stomach of an owl does not digest fur, feathers and bones. These remains are rolled into oblong pellets which the owl coughs up a few hours after eating. Yuck!
- Dogs do not have appendix. That’s peculiar!
- Kissing bugs suck human blood and their favorite site of attack is on the face about the lips, hence the name. Ouch!!!
- Chow chow is a unique breed of dog not only for its size but also for its blue-black tongue. Very unique indeed!
- Spitting cobra is capable of ejecting its venom from a distance of about 2.4 m or about 8 ft into the eyes of its victims. That’s really dangerous!
- Magicicada are unusual among insects for their lengthy development period. These periodical cicadas have an extremely long life cycle of 13 to 17 years as a nymph feeding on tree roots while living below ground. That’s absurd!
- The female hyena is larger than the male and, unlike most female animals, selects her mating partners. Female dominated world?
- There are more types of harmful moths than harmful butterflies. I should know!
- Jaeger attacks slower and weaker seabirds such as terns, and gulls in mid-air, forcing them to give up whatever food they have in their beaks or even forcing them to disgorge whatever they have swallowed. Bully bird huh! And yuck!!!
- As other chamois feed, one of them keeps watch, announcing danger with a whistling sound. Very vigilant!
- Booby, a tropical seabird related to the garnet is named for its apparent stupidity – it’s so unwary that it is easily caught by humans. Stupid bird indeed!
- Unlike most moths, the clearwing moth flies during the day. Unusual moth!
- During mating season, the male bobolink is black, white and buff. At other times, he resembles the female which has olive plumage streaked with black and is yellow underneath. That’s unique!
- Male emus incubate the eggs and care for the chicks. What a loving father!
- Eastern newt larva leaves the water and lives on land for 2 to 3 years before returning to water to change into adult form. Is that so?
- Opossum or possum are noted for their tendency to feign death or “play possum,” when cornered a strategy that causes most predators to leave them unmolested. That is such a wise move! I’ve seen that on war movies several times.
- Katydid is an insect with an unusual sense of hearing. It hears through an organ located on its forelegs. This insect is really different.

Very interesting article.
Thank you, once again, I learned some interesting and amusing facts here. It’s a first time that I heard that a certain breed of dog can’t bark. Are they mute or something?
well done thanks for writting…
lots of people keep Basenjis as pets because they are quiet.
another note about Koalas, they are one animal that has SHORTER life spans when kept in captivity they simply cannot handle the stress, ones used in zoos where they offer pictures taken with koalas, have lifespans less than half of what they have in the wild.
Well done. I always enjoy your articles. I did know about the owls
but not that dogs don’t have an appendix.
