Antarctica
The different parts of the arctic.
Icebergs: They are formed when big bits break off glaciers and ice shelves. The biggest Icebergs are huge pieces of ice shelves; the largest one on record is 32000 square kilometres! That is bigger than Belgium (and that’s pretty big)
Mountains: The Transantarctic Mountains stretch from east Antarctica to west Antarctica. The highest peak in Antarctica is Mt. Markham near the Ross Sea, and is 4,351 metres high! The base of this mountain is made of rocks that are surprisingly like the rocks of Australia and Africa.
Sea: The best part of the Antarctica Sea is the little Krill. If we harvested Krill we could feed all the famine countries and everyone wouldn’t have starved. If we harvested Krill, though, we would interfere with the natural flow of things. The sea ice can cover 14-16million square kilometres in late winter. THAT’S BIG!
Glacier: Now-a-days in west Antarctica scientists are worried that the glaciers are shrinking more than they should since 1990. They are losing 60% more ice than they gain from snowfall. The water level is rising by .07inches per year.
Ice shelves: This year scientists saw an iceshelf collapse (right.) This worries scientists because too many ice shelves collapsing could increase the sea level and flood an entire nation! Ice shelves are basically ice sheets that have floated back to were they came from and connect to form ice shelves.
