Giant Squids From the Deep Seas

A brief look at the giant squids found by fishermen and research done on the species.

Have you ever wondered what you would find in the deep seas around us?

Each time a creature from the deep sea was washed ashore or caught, it would set me wondering about the creatures that live in the deepest part of earth. One of these fascinating creatures is the giant squid.

Just recently, there was a report that a giant squid was caught in Antarctic waters in February last year. Measuring at a staggering 10 meters long with an estimated weight of 495 kilograms, it was the biggest squid ever caught. However, scientists believe that even with a fearsome beak and razor-sharp hooks, it may well be small compared to others still lurking in the depths.

There were various documentaries, which had recorded some of these deep sea creatures. Look at this vampire squid found 3,200 feet under the sea and of course, this squid caught by the Japanese scientists was a baby compared to the one found in the recent report.

Scientists have also conducted studies on the giant squids for years. In the spring of 1997, Dr Clyde Roper of the National Museum of Natural History led an expedition to the South Pacific to gather information on the giant squids and other sea life.

Looking at all the reports and recordings of the giant squids, it makes one wonders where the real giants are hiding because the so far the only evidence is the occasional specimen caught by fishermen or found in the bellies of sperm whales. As Dr Roper points out, “It’s a big ocean out there and we don’t know precisely where the habitat is. We know it exists, but we don’t know exactly where.”

Maybe one day some scientific expedition would stumble upon it!
