Have You Ever Wondered?

A few interesting tidbits.

Have you ever heard the saying that humans only use 10% of their brains? I have heard it many times. I personally found this interesting since I had a college instructor who told me that we only use 3% of our brain. I soon stumbled across this shortly after and have yet to call him on it.

  • PET scans show that yes, the human brain does not work all at once, but that we use most our brain at one point or another through out the course of the day. It has never been pinpointed as to where this myth originated.

Blood  is blue inside the body and only turns red when it hits oxygen.

  • This is false. The walls of the blood vessels only make blood appear blue through the skin.

When you sneeze your heart skips a beat.

  • This is false. Pressure is created in the chest which is called Valsalva Manoevre and gives you the feeling that your heart has stopped fora moment. In reality it keeps beating along.

You will get warts if a toad urinates on you while holding it.

  • Toads do secrete toxins that may give you a slight burning sensation but this does not cause warts. Warts come from viruses.

Daddy Long Legs are the most poisonous spider.

  • There are actually three different spiders that were given this nickname. The one we know as the daddy long leg is not harmful to humans. It is also said that their fangs are to small to puncture human skin, this is also untrue. They tested this Myth on the show Mythbusters and the bite only caused a slight burning sensation.

Red food coloring is made from beetles.

  • Disturbingly this is true. Not all red food colorings, but yes some are made from ground up beetles. For example this can be found in flavored gelatin, candies, and fruit juices. The coloring comes from the shell of the female Dactylopius Coccus Beetle.

If you get squimish about ants like some one I know, this won’t make you feel any better.

  • According to E.O. Wilson there are an estimated 10,000,000,000,000 ants on earth. Their combined weight is the equivalent to the entire human population.
