Digestion is the process of breaking down the food one consumes into a firm that is usable by the body. Food must be broken down and changed into simple substances before it can be absorbed in the blood and distributed to cells all over the body.

Digestive system in human beings consists of several organs. They work together first to grind up food particles and then to supply specials chemicals called enzymes. These chemicals turn food into the substances the body needs.

Digestive organs include the mouth, Oesophagus, stomach, liver, pancreas, gall bladder, duodenum and the small and large intestines. Each part of the digestive system in turn plays a role in preparing the food for the next process.

Digestion begins in the mouth, where food is chewed and mixed with saliva to moisten it. The enzyme ptyalin in saliva starts converting starch molecules into simple sugars. The food passes through oesophagus into the stomach where it is churned by movements of stomach wall.

Later, stomach secrets digestive juices that work on proteins and convert food into a thick liquid. After some time, the liquid passes into small intestine. The next few stages are conversion of protein into fatty acids and starch into sugar. Pancreas and liver also are involved in the process.

Once digestion is completed, the usable parts of the food are absorbed through the wall of the small intestine. Blood distributes them throughout the body.

Food that has not been digested is called residue. It is passed on to the large intestine where it is prepared for elimination from the body.
