Ugly Animals
Some very ugly animals.
There are lots of ugly things in this world. Ugly people (inside and out), ugly places, and, of course, ugly animals.
- The Aardvark, an African animal whose name means “earth pig”. It’s tongue can be up to 12 inches long.
- The Marine Iguana, a threatened herbivore from South America.
- The Armadillo. It’s Spanish name means “little armored one”. The ninebanded armadillo has earned the nickname “Hillbilly speed bump”
- The Camel Spider. Camel spiders are not spiders. Like spiders, they are members of the class Arachnida, but they are actually solpugids.
- The Red Uakari, an endangered primate. Their amazing jaws can open a hard Brazil nut.
- The Pufferfish. The meat of some pufferfish is considered a delicacy. Called fugu in Japan, it is very, very expensive and only prepared by trained chefs who know that even a single bad cut means almost death for a customer. Many such deaths occur annually.
- The Sand Tiger Shark. Despite their ghastly appearance, sand tiger sharks are rather docile, usually attacking humans only in self-defense.
- The Warthog. A group of warthogs is called a sounder.
- The Platypus, one of the two mammals known to lay eggs. The other is the echidna.
- The most ugly animal of all, the (female) Angler Fish. When a young and free-swimming male angler comes across a female, he latches onto her with his teeth. Over time, the male will physically fuse with the female, connecting to her skin and bloodstream.
