A look at some weird and not-so-weird facts that come from scientific studies.

Raining Animals

Believe it or not, Animals raining from the sky is a common Meteorological Phenomenon. You will find these occurrences recorded throughout history. The most common things that are recorded falling from the sky are fish and frogs but birds have been known to do this. The unusual thing about this is that most of these animals survive, especially the fish, which leads scientist to believe there is little time from the pick up, of these animals, to the drop time. Sometimes they do fall frozen, with some of them inside a block of ice. This indicates that these animals were in higher altitudes where it is colder. The most recent recording was in India in 2006, Serbia in 2005 and Wales in 2004.

Dance Hysteria

The first dance hysteria that was reported was in 1374, when throngs of people took to the streets and danced until they totally collapsed. The first time this happened was in Aachen, Germany but it spread through the Low Country and France. Usually they would foam at the mouth and speak in tongues. Even after they fell to the ground they would continue to gyrate and twist. This dance reached its peak in 1418. The symptoms could have been caused by ergot poisoning, otherwise known as St. Anthony’s fire. This can be ingested by eating rye bread, that had been contaminated by Claviceps purpurea, which is a fungus that contained toxins, one of which equals LSD of today.

Moon Moving Away from Us

The moon’s orbit is getting bigger at a rate of 3.8 centimeters a year. The moon raises tides here on earth and the side of the Earth that is facing the Moon is closer.  The Moon feels a stronger pull of gravity than the earth do, which leaves the part of the Earth facing away from the Moon feeling less gravity than at the center. Scientist figure that in another 15 billion years this orbit will stabilize and be at 1.6 times of its present size but we will have to put up with 55 days long, equaling one day, that’s how long it would take the Moon to orbit the Earth in the future.

Belly Button Lint

Now here’s something that everyone wants to know, I’m sure. Where does belly button lint come from? Well, believe it or not this was a scientific study and they came to the conclusion that men suffer from this more than women and there is a logical reason for that. The hair on men’s stomach is courser than that on women. When this hair chafes against underwear it raises the lint to the top where it finds your belly button to collect in. Women don’t get this as the hair on their body is finer and smoother.  Regardless, this is harmless to the body and don’t need any corrective action. Personally I don’t think it required a scientific study either.

Animals Explode

Dead animals can explode. The reasons for this occurrence can vary such as a buildup of gases in the body, if animal is decomposing. It happened in Taiwan to a dead sperm whale that weighted 50 tons. It is said that when this whale exploded his innards covered the surrounding shops. Frogs are also known to explode while alive. Some use the puffing up technique to make themselves look bigger but due to some malfunction in their system they explode.

There are some weird things that happen in this world of ours that would certainly set you to thinking. These are just a few of them.
